D.R.I.V.E. (Detroit Regional Interfaith Voice for Equity) is a coalition of clergy, congregations and allies, acting and advocating to create a just, equal and equitable community through congregation-based organizing. St. John’s is an active member along with 30+ other faith organizations.

Here is an example of how this worked in Baltimore. Build One Baltimore. One can see how effective it is when we raise our voices together!

To date, over 400 interviews have been conducted in SE Michigan and people identified issues important to our region such as crime/safety, transportation, education, job opportunities, and mental health. We are continuing to build a strong base of churches behind D.R.I.V.E.

As D.R.I.V.E continues to grow, we will make connections and community through half hour one-on-one conversations. From each of these interviews we learn about each other, create friendships, and build stronger community ties. St. John’s has several ministries where these strong individual and community connections can help us grow our outreach (examples: Open Hands Garden and Food Pantry, New to You Resale Shop, South Oakland Shelter).

Want to meet for coffee and get to know each other in a one-on-one relationship meeting?  Contact any of the D.R.I.V.E. members to meet, or be open to meet when a friendly offer is made. No worries on meeting, it’s not a sales pitch or request for money – it’s just how we get to know each other better beyond a quick hello.

In the fall, St. John's DRIVE team hosted an interesting information session about the Boys & Girls Club. We learned about the great work they do with youth in our communities on academic support, healthy living, and leadership.  The Boys & Girls Club has an ongoing need for volunteers. They need academic mentors, career exploration, transportation, and corporate partnerships. If you would like to support their incredible mission in any of these ways, please visit their volunteer sign-up page to enter your information here, and they will reach out to discuss. For more information, Nicole Stewart  This email address is being protected from spambots. D.R.I.V.E.'s tri-county lay-leaders meetings happen on the third Thursday of each month at St. John's (third floor) from 7-8:30pm. We are moving to meeting once-quarterly instead of once-monthly.  In between meetings, we will send monthly emails with planning information, updates, and event information.  We propose meeting on the second Sunday of the following months, immediately following the 10:15am service.  Mark your calendars for: May 13, August 12, and November 11.
